Representatives from the states of Hawaii, California, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and FHWA met via a video teleconference to discuss the merits of hosting a conference that's specifically focused towards bridge inspection. All discussion participants fully agreed that practical information could be gleaned from such a multi-state bridge inspection conference, practical information that the attendees could immediately put to use in their own bridge inspection programs. As a result, Oregon Department of Transportation decided to sponsor the Pacific Northwest Bridge Inspectors' Conference. The focus of the Bridge Inspectors' Conference will be:
- A forum for bridge inspectors, to share information, innovations, ideas, and best practices.
- Provide a means for certified bridge inspectors to fulfill the NBIS requirements for continuing education units.
- Covering topics such as Bridge Inspection Safety Practices, Inspecting Concrete, Timber or Steel Bridges, Bridge Inspection How-To Case Studies, Bridge Health Monitoring, and New Methods and Tools for accomplishing our work.
- Provide a forum for the participants to gain a current federal perspective on the implementation requirements of the new NBIS.
